Nobody knows (well, nobody outside of Yahoo!) if this launch represents a test before starting a U.S. blog site. But Yahoo! Japan has opened its Weblog service.
Yahoo! Japan Starts Blog Service

(Page 1)2. I would personally rather see Yahoo! (in the USA, at least) buy Six Apart, the parent company of Moveable Type, TypePad, and now LiveJournal.
What Yahoo! needs to have a successful blog service is users. If they simply start a new service, they will have to spend a lot of ad dollars convincing people to use their service. Most people won't change their current blog host. Six Apart would give Yahoo! thousands of users and an instant blog community. While I'm not a fan of LiveJournal, TypePad is one of the best blogger services out there. I use TypePad to host my own blog.
Whatever Yahoo! does, they had better do it quick if they ever want to be a player in this space. Google is going to kick their butts otherwise.
