CNET has reported on the Flickr backlash when it was revealed that Flickr members would have to create Yahoo! IDs by a certain date in 2006. But the backlash is moderated in the "Flick off" thread by sane voices wondering what all the fuss is about. There has been some anti-Yahoo! sentiment in Flickr since the buyout happened, easily explained as fierce independence. But now some of the malcontents are wishing that Google had purchased Flickr; this is foolishness. Big Media is Big Media, and—truth be told—Flickr could use an overhauling dose of Big Media treatment. I can hardly wait for some Yahoo!-ization to sweep through the service. Bandwidth limitations at Flickr are inhibiting, and the site is painfully slow. The great innovation, tagging, is no longer a novelty. If Yahoo! could make the site feel quicker and limitless, Flickr could hit the mainstream.
