Yahoo! Mail Developer on Yahoo! Domain Keys

With the recent release of a new build for Yahoo! Mail Beta, many people are now seeing an indicator for Yahoo! Domain Keys in the header. A lot of people have been asking what this icon represents, and so one of the developers, Ryan Kennedy, has posted this to his blog.

Yahoo! DomainKeys were introduced some time ago, and the regular interface has shown the indicator for a while. It's a mechanism to help
prevent spoofed messaging and 'phishing' by indicating that the message did come from the place it says.

Ryan does a good job explaining what it's purpose is, but I disagree with his statement that it's use is picking up (the article he points to is from July 2005), I've only really seen it on messages from Yahoo! itself. Microsoft is seeing similar adoption problems with it's competing SenderID system.

I'd love to put up a picture of the indicator, but as of last night I'm back on the previous version (Build 187.4) that didn't have the feature :-(

1. I believe that gmail also uses domainkeys in their headers.

2. I never noticed GMail had the 'Mailed-By' field in the header - but I haven't found any information about what that actually means.

Y! Mail does a much better job showing that information to the user - it's in the compact header that is the default.

3. This adding of "DomainKeys" is such a pain in the arsh. They need to add a switch so you can turn it on and off. If they leave it like it is, I will not be using yahoo mail anymore.

4. I'm not sure what you mean - as a User, you don't have to do anything and it's appearance in the Header is a level of assurance that the message came from where it said.

It's just the Mail providers that have to set-up the proper bits on their servers, so that DomainKeys will recognize them as valid.
