Yahoo! Plus - Countdown to the End...

As we've previously reported, today is the last day for the Yahoo! Plus service.

As of 11.59pm PST (or would that be PDT?) the independent Yahoo! Plus bundle will be discontinued and current subscribers will need to buy the individual components:

For me, it's probably going to turn out cheaper - of the above, I only need Yahoo! Mail Plus - my Launchcast Plus should be covered by my Yahoo! Music Unlimited subscription. I'm going to miss the Plus version of My Yahoo - no Ads in IE is a big value (Adblock takes care of it in Firefox), and losing the Y! Parental Controls may affect my Kids PC.

I'm not really going to miss the other services - Y! Games All Stars doesn't seem to be that big a deal these days (the All Star rooms are pretty sparse); I've used Y! Phone while traveling - it's pretty cool, but doesn't have everything I need (like Flight Status lookup).

The Y! Plus Browser was effectively dropped years ago (when all the DSL Partnerships started appearing) - we've not had an upgrade in forever.

The irony here is that on 4/17, they automatically renewed my subscription - I trust I'll get that back.

Tomorrow will be interesting - I haven't seen a 'free' version of Yahoo! in so long...

1. Have any Yahoo! Plus subscribers had trouble signing up for Yahoo! Mail Plus? When I click on the upgrade button in Y! Mail, I end up on a generic "my services" page with no option to upgrade. Do I need to wait until the Y! Plus subscription has lapsed? I sure hope this doesn't mess up my account!

2. Note: No need to buy Y! Mail Plus since Y! Plus users are to receive a year extension of the Y! Mail Plus service for free (as per the email we rec'd a month ago).

3. Joe - I have no mention of an extension in the email I have, and according to the FAQ, we would revert back to the 1GB free version:

4. Here's what I received:

"It's important for you to note that this will not affect your status as a Yahoo! Mail Plus subscriber. You will still continue to receive the benefits of Yahoo! Mail Plus as long as you remain an active subscriber to that service. Moreover, to thank you for being a loyal Yahoo! Plus customer, we're offering you extended credit on your Yahoo! Mail Plus subscription: we'll pay for the next year of service. After that, we'll resume charging you as normal. No action is required from you - this credit will be applied automatically."

Is this not being offered to everyone? Hmmm... Maybe it's because I was a Y! Mail Plus subscriber who upgraded to Y! Plus? --> http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/plus/plus-15.html

5. I think you are right - I was never a Y! Mail Plus subscriber, I just got it as part of Y! Plus.

Here's the email I got...

We're writing to let you know that the Yahoo! Plus service will be discontinued as of 11:59 p.m. PST on April 22, 2006. At that time, the premium benefits associated with your Yahoo! Plus membership will end, but you may continue using your Yahoo! Plus ID and password to sign in to Yahoo! and access your personal data (such as your email, photos, My Yahoo! content,
etc.).

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions to better understand how this may affect the specific Yahoo! Plus services you use (such as anti-virus software, high-resolution photo downloads, etc.). If you require further assistance, please fill out this form, and a dedicated specialist will respond.

7. Google mail (Gmail) gives 2 GB of space for free and the ads in Gmail are not that many and does not slowdown at all. So, it is time that Yahoo reconsiders its package of mail plus and increase the space to 3GB and also allow us to send larger attachment.
